How BINGO Digi Built a Year-Round Breakfast Adoption Strategy for Kellogg’s in China

Building Relevance for a Breakfast Format That Was Not Yet Routine

Kellogg’s faced a market-development challenge in China. The brand was competing with other cereal products, but also with breakfast routines built around warm, freshly prepared foods.

BINGO Digi developed a year-long strategy to make ready-to-eat cereal easier to understand within the lives of consumers aged 18 to 30. “Energise Life, Healthily at Home” connected product variety, everyday occasions, social content and major e-commerce moments within one annual platform.

The programme was designed to move Kellogg’s beyond an occasional hunger solution and towards a more familiar breakfast and snack option. The available materials do not provide sales, brand-lift or consumption-frequency results.

Five Core Product Series

Used to match different products with specific consumer needs and occasions.

Nearly 20 Flavours

Used to communicate greater variety across the supplied product portfolio.

101 Everyday Moments

Planned as an always-on content system extending beyond major shopping festivals.

The Challenge

Competing With Both Cereal Brands and Established Breakfast Routines

Kellogg’s needed to build relevance in a category where many consumers were more familiar with hot breakfasts than cold ready-to-eat cereal. Competitors including Calbee had also established recognisable propositions around granola, flavour variety and convenience.

The target audience contained two different mindsets. Lifestyle-focused consumers valued taste, presentation, quality and a sense of ritual. Time-poor consumers prioritised speed, portability and minimal preparation.

One generic convenience message could make the product sound practical but interchangeable. A purely aspirational message could look attractive without explaining when consumers should choose it.

The campaign therefore needed to explain different roles for the portfolio, connect them with recognisable situations and create a route from social discovery to Tmall and JD.

The Insight

The Portfolio Could Support More Occasions Than the Existing Breakfast Message Suggested

01

Heritage Could Strengthen Familiarity and Trust

Kellogg’s long history gave the campaign a credible foundation without relying on unsupported comparisons with competitors.

02

Product Variety Could Become a Content System

Five product series and nearly 20 flavours allowed the plan to move beyond one cereal message. Different products could be connected with family breakfast, fitness, children’s occasions, indulgent snacks and quick meals, subject to the approved positioning of each item.

03

Different Lifestyles Needed Different Reasons to Act

Lifestyle-focused consumers could respond to taste, creativity and breakfast presentation. Faster-paced consumers needed clearer demonstrations of preparation, portability and situational convenience.
The opportunity was to organise these strengths into repeatable consumer stories.

The Strategy

Unite Two Consumer Mindsets Through “Energise Life, Healthily at Home”

BINGO Digi built the annual platform around one central idea while giving each audience a distinct route into it.

Make Cereal Part of an Enjoyable Routine
01

Make Cereal Part of an Enjoyable Routine

For lifestyle-focused consumers, content presented Kellogg’s through taste, visual presentation, pairings and small daily rituals. The role was not simply to save time, but to make breakfast or snacking feel more varied and enjoyable.

Make Cereal Easier to Use in Busy Moments

For time-poor consumers, content focused on simple preparation, portability and situations where a low-effort food option was useful, including rushed mornings, office breaks and travel.

Connect Brand Building With Retail Timing

The same positioning ran through seasonal content and major shopping festivals. Regular communication built familiarity while 618, Double 11 and New Year created stronger purchase moments.

Health-oriented language needed to remain tied to the nutrition information and approved claims of the exact product shown. The strategy therefore treated “healthy” as a controlled positioning territory, not a universal claim across every cereal or serving occasion.

Campaign Execution

Giving Each Annual Phase a Different Behavioural and Commercial Role

May to August: Playful Living

May to August: Playful Living

The first phase used 618, the Granola upgrade and supplied IP collaboration touchpoints involving Disney, Pikachu and Frozen to emphasise variety, collectability and play. Qixi content added breakfast-pairing ideas for couples.

September to November: Enjoyable Living

The second phase built towards Double 11. Selection guides, food rankings, value messages and product comparisons helped consumers navigate the portfolio before promotional activity intensified.

December to January: Value Living

The final major phase connected customised packaging and festive storytelling with New Year gifting, family gatherings and homecoming occasions.

February to April: Always-On Continuity

Regular content and community activity maintained visibility between the larger campaign waves. This prevented the annual platform from becoming a sequence of disconnected retail bursts.

Connecting Scenario-Led Social Content With Tmall and JD

BINGO Digi organised the programme around the AIPL journey: Awareness, Interest, Purchase and Loyalty.

Xiaohongshu, Douyin, Weibo and WeChat introduced product ideas through platform-appropriate content. Tmall and JD provided the principal conversion destinations, supported by livestreams, content placements and native commerce tools.

The creative system focused on occasions rather than isolated claims. Rushed mornings, late work, post-workout eating, drama nights, breakfast dates and Spring Festival travel each provided a reason to introduce a product.

“101 Moments You Need Kellogg’s” extended this approach across the year. The series created a planning structure for matching products, audience needs, seasonal context and platform format, helping the brand maintain continuity outside major retail periods.

Measurement should separate reach, engagement, search activity, product-page visits, livestream performance, orders, repeat purchase and any verified change in breakfast frequency. Without these results, the programme remains a strategic and execution framework rather than proof of changed consumer habits.

The five-series, nearly 20-flavour and 101-moment figures describe the scope of the supplied plan. They should not be presented as campaign outcomes.

Why It Worked

The Strategy Addressed Category Adoption Before Asking for Immediate Conversion

BINGO Digi treated Kellogg’s challenge as more than a contest for reach or shelf visibility. Ready-to-eat cereal first had to become understandable within established breakfast routines.

The annual platform addressed that barrier in three ways. Audience segmentation prevented convenience and lifestyle messages from being compressed into one vague proposition. Scenario-led content showed when different products could be relevant. Seasonal retail planning then connected longer-term familiarity with stronger moments for product consideration and purchase.

The portfolio provided enough variety for year-round communication. The 101-moment system connected different products with work, travel, exercise, entertainment and family occasions.

The case reflects BINGO Digi’s contribution to China market strategy, audience segmentation, annual content planning, brand localisation, social seeding, AIPL journey design, IP collaboration planning, livestream content and Tmall and JD conversion planning.

Without the original sales, brand-lift or consumption study, the case should conclude that BINGO Digi built a structured route towards breakfast adoption—not that it independently proved a lasting change in Chinese breakfast behaviour.
